Hākari Feast Renews Spirit Of Entertainment

Hākari Feast Renews Spirit Of Entertainment - Kia Kawea Tātou E Te Rēhia

Hākari, a feast of research and creative activities, will entice communities to explore and advance indigenous performing arts and theatre at a concert in central Auckland on Friday 30th July.

The concert is timed to celebrate language and culture for Māori Language week and will showcase te reo Māori research and traditional entertainment from the Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga research programme.

During the concert two performing arts groups will entertain audiences: firstly Reo will perform with taonga pūoro, mōteatea-like chanting and digital textures, deepening and extending the sound qualities of voice and instruments to create ambient moods and atmospheres; Tohu, will present a collection of songs entitled “Awa” a mix of traditional love songs with modern elements sung in Māori and English as well as launching their latest CD “Whakawhiti”. Tohu’s music is said to express, respond to and breathe life from experiences of living in this land —Aotearoa, the environment and its people. Both groups will be led by Te Ahukaramū Charles Royal.

According to Charles research recently conducted by Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga has enabled the establishment of a modern whare tapere (whare tapere were pre-contact houses of storytelling, dance, music, games and more). A selection of presentations of te reo Māori projects will be shared by leading researchers: Dr Riri Ellis (Ngāi Te Rangi) Haromi Williams (Tūhoe Education Trust-Anamata) and Dr Joe Te Rito (Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga) during the event.

“The significance of the whare tapere research relates to the revitalisation and creative potential of indigenous knowledge and the reorganisation of the resources and assets of a Māori community to enable it to realise its potential” says Charles.
