Introducing...YMCA Tauranga’s Youth 4 Youth Programme
Working with young people has been a staple activity of YMCAs around the world for generations.
Now the YMCA Tauranga is taking its youth work to a whole new level with the introduction of its exciting and innovative Youth 4 Youth programme.
Kicking off in February 2011, the new, free programme is designed to help youth develop life skills, set and achieve goals, and build a sense of community spirit.
“Youth 4 Youth is a ground-breaking programme for Tauranga,” says YMCA Youth & Volunteer Coordinator Keeley Ferguson. “It is not a youth scheme where the agenda and actions will be dictated by a coordinator. Instead it is an opportunity for young people to decide what is important to them and their peers and then do something about it. The YMCA’s role will be to facilitate and lend a word or two of wisdom when needed.”
Meeting weekly at the YMCA, participants will be able to hang out in a cool and safe environment where they feel confident to grow and express their opinions and develop into positive members of society. Skills will be learnt through practical activities, trips, camps, discussions, and guest speakers. They will also work together to create and host much needed youth events such as sport, music, fashion and outdoor activities.
Youth 4 Youth is designed for 14 to 17 year olds. Any youth interested in being a part of this programme is encouraged to contact the YMCA and fill out an application. Opportunities also exist to volunteer for the YMCA’s upcoming Summer Holiday Programme – it is a whole lot of fun and looks great on your resume!
