Adam Chamber Music Festival draws closer

Adam Chamber Music Festival draws closer

Excitement is building among chamber music lovers as the eleventh Adam Chamber Music Festival draws closer, with ticket orders coming in from as far afield as Denmark.

Festival Manager Roger Lloyd says with the shorter format of the festival this year people are opting to come for the whole eight days.

He says after ten festivals ‘The Adam Festival’ has developed an international reputation, with famous artists and their audience drawn to come to Nelson by the many of the same factors.

“What draws them here is the opportunity to share some of the most intimate and wonderful music ever written with like-minded people and to hear it - or play it - in beautiful heritage venues,” he said. “The size of the city makes getting around so easy, there are all the other ‘Nelson factors’ people can build into their holiday - then there’s the added bonus of getting away from the northern hemisphere winter!”

Tickets are selling well, with some concerts such as Grand Opening with the Hermitage String Trio from Europe and the celebration of Liszt’s birthday at the School of Music with pianist Martin Roscoe looking certain to reach sell out status.

“The programme this year is outstanding,” Lloyd said. “Other international stars include Canadian clarinettist James Campbell, then we have our ensemble in residence the New Zealand String Quartet, and a who’s who of New Zealand musicians from Michael Houston to Richard Nunns.”

Ticket agent Greg Shaw at Everyman in Nelson said there’s no other event he handles where the fans show such an overall commitment.

“It’s rare for us to sell tickets to a single show,” he said. “People commit to several days – we even had one guy who spent about a grand on tickets and gave a donation for the same amount.”
