Smalltown - A Tribute to the 29 Lost

Today the memory of the Pike River miners has been immortalized through a song by New Zealand band, Lost Boys. The song is called ‘Smalltown’ and is a tribute to the 29 men that lost their lives.

Shayne Malone, lead singer and guitarist of Lost Boys, who wrote Smalltown, says “While the whole country was in hope that the outcome would be a good one, there came the horrible realization that 29 of our countrymen had lost their lives by just going to work one day, and this is when, from my heart, came the desire to write this song. I had the music for a long time but re-wrote the words in light of the disaster and how I felt about it all”.

Smalltown is a melodic rock ballad song, with hints of country based elements that could possibly be compared to Bon Jovi’s style. The band says “It is a charity worth supporting as it is the families that will benefit from it and this is our way of giving our time and talents to the ones who are suffering a great loss”. It is also a song of hope and courage in coming through these tragic events as portrayed in the lyric from the song, ‘But they’ve both seen better days but like us they’ll be alright, Like the moon that lights the dark we’ll come together when times get hard’

The song has been released as a download only and can be found by going to www.29lost.co.nz. It is available for a minimum donation of $1.99 with the proceeds going to the Pike River Miners' Relief Fund.
