Wellington girl awarded prize for Mexican drawing competition

A Plimmerton schoolgirl will receive a special prize this Friday after her drawing was chosen from more than 6000 entries to win the international ‘This is My Mexico’ competition promoted by the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Luis Enrique Franco, Head of Mission at the Embassy of Mexico in Wellington will present the prize at a ceremony at St Theresa’s School on the 25th of March at 2pm. Prize-winner Elise Holzer, 9, said, “When my Mum heard about it she had tears coming out of her eyes because she was so happy and amazed!”.

Elise’s picture will be exhibited along with 80 other artworks in the Papalote Children’s Museum in Mexico City until the 30th of April before the exhibition tours several countries, including New Zealand. The 14th ‘Este es Mi México’ (‘This is My Mexico’) children’s drawing competition received entrants from 35 countries and was themed ‘The gifts of Mexico to the world’. Children were asked to illustrate the global impact of products that originated in Mexico, such as chocolate, tomatoes, avocados and vanilla.
