Phoenix Confirmed For Forsyth Barr Stadium

Phoenix Confirmed For Forsyth Barr Stadiu

Wellington Phoenix has confirmed they will host the current Hyundai A League champions, the Brisbane Roar, in a pre-season match at the new Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin.

This will be the first time the Phoenix has played in Dunedin and is scheduled to be held on August 20.

David Davies, CEO, Forsyth Barr Stadium and avid football fan himself, is thrilled to have a football match to test the Stadium in the first month of completion.

“Hosting these two elite teams in Dunedin is a great opportunity for the city to experience A League football. This is the first time we’ve had this calibre of football in the city, so we expect a competitive game and a bit of yellow fever to spread south.

“This fixture also forms an important part of our testing schedule for the Stadium ahead of the RWC 2011 so we’re delighted to be able to include a football match of this quality in the programme for variety.”

Phoenix coach, Ricki Herbert was also delighted that the game is being played in Dunedin, and at a fantastic new stadium.

“Dunedin hasn’t had an opportunity to host international football or a professional team for some time so it is good we are going there,” he said.

“The South Island has been incredibly supportive of the Phoenix over the past two years. Both our matches against Adelaide in Christchurch drew over 15,000 fans, with one being almost 20,000.”
