ASB Sports Centre open day - if possible, please don't drive

NEWS RELEASE 25 August 2011

ASB Sports Centre open day - if possible, please don't drive

The official opening of the ASB Sports Centre at Kilbirnie this Saturday 27 August will be an exciting one-off event. With thousands of Wellingtonians expected to visit the new centre, Wellington City Council wants to encourage people use public transport, to cycle or walk - to help avoid any traffic congestion in the Kilbirnie area.

There is FREE travel to and from the ASB Centre on a bus shuttle running between Wellington Railway Station and the centre. The shuttle will stop at all bus stops along route number 2 (via Mt Victoria and Hataitai), starting at 9.30am and running every half hour until 2pm. The last bus will leave the railway station at 2pm and the centre at 3.30pm.

We are hoping for good weather on Saturday, so we'd encourage people to consider walking or cycling. This could be as a warm-up before trying out netball, basketball, futsal or one of the other sports on display. The website journeyplanner.org.nz is great for planning your route.

ASB Sports Centre Manager Craig Hutchings says if people do have to drive to the open day, a park-and-ride service will run from the Evans Bay Marina car park on Evans Bay Parade. "There will be only limited parking at the centre itself - so it'd be wise to avoid trying to drive there."
