Artists explore repetition and pattern at ROAR!
Driven, persistent and obsessive Andrew Blythe's black and white 'NO' paintings fill the whole page with a sea of meticulous letters that march purposefully from left to right across the picture plain. While using a similarly reduced colour palette Angus Walker's words create quite a different effect; the words apparently stripped of meaning become an energetic pulsating beat. If Andrew's work mirrors the unstoppable momentum of the city Angus reflects it urgent frenzy.
Pablos' artist Reece Tong has a highly developed and intuitive understanding of the value of repetition and pattern. His paintings emphasise the essential elements of objects through reduction and repetition. From the same studio Charles Cunningham draws relentlessly, alternating intense geometric patterns with closely cropped images of people at work and play.
Hyun Mu Shin's organic forms in clay hint at a process of metamorphous, blobs emerging from the primordial soup . His manipulated photographs magnify the bulldozer's devastation in scenes uncannily reminiscent of Christchurch but actually depicting a more local destruction.
Also in clay Rachel Stevenson's kumara emerge from the ground and are laid out in rows and sorted by size as if recently harvested, the formal arrangement focusing on order while the gorgeous individualism of each tuber glistens in the sun.
Cherie Mellsop's shimmering patterns made from circular sales stickers and hand drawn grids have already caused a stir at the recent Creative Spaces exhibition 'Make Believe'. Now at ROAR! there are brand new examples of Cherie's oeuvre. When asked why she works this way she simply replies "I like it, I love it"
