SPCA Cupcakes, Pupcakes and Sweet Times Promised!

25 August 2011

SPCA Cupcakes, Pupcakes and Sweet Times Promised!

SPCA Cupcake Day, Monday 29th August, is the third annual celebration of this ‘cats and dogs’ nationwide fundraiser. Thousands of people throughout the country will be baking, selling and eating cupcakes to raise much-needed funds for SPCA Centres from Southland to Kaitaia.

“Cupcake Day for the SPCA is a sweet way to raise lots of dough for SPCA centres across New Zealand,” says the SPCA's National Chief Executive, Robyn Kippenberger.

“The last two years’ Cupcake Days have raised over $350,000, providing much needed funds and assistance for our 48 SPCA centres. As New Zealand's principal animal welfare charity we care for more than 60,000 animals each year. This is a fun way for communities to support their local SPCA and a tasty way to build community spirit,” she adds.

Cupcakes of all shapes, colours and creations will be on sale in streets, malls, schools, businesses and community centres thanks to the thousands of SPCA supporters who have signed up as SPCA Cupcake Cooks. Money raised locally for SPCA Cupcake Day stays local and supports the local SPCA in that area.

SPCA centres across the country are running events with the support of local businesses. In Marlborough locals will participate in the ‘Cupcakes and Cocktails’ and ‘Cupcakes and Canines’ events, Gisborne plans over a dozen cupcake stalls, MasterChef contestant Tracey Lee is supporting the cause in Taupo, and the ‘Cupcake Kids’ in Lyall Bay will raise funds for SPCA Wellington.

Cupcake Cooks are strongly encouraged to use SPCA Blue Tick free range eggs or barn eggs in their cupcakes. These eggs come from hens that are farmed humanely where they are able to display all their natural behaviours – happy hens make happy eggs!

“And don’t forget that cupcakes are for humans – not for your 4 legged friends. We've included a special Pupcake recipe for dogs, without ingredients like sugar or chocolate that may harm them, so your four-legged cupcake lovers can celebrate Cupcake Day too! Pupcakes are safe for your dog to eat, but they are special treats, and should only be offered in moderation,” says Robyn.

Cupcake Cooks who have registered online at www.spcacupcakeday.co.nz are also in to win fantastic prizes from Fashion Designer Ooby Ryn, designer Allen Hemberger, Bachcare Holiday Homes, Hansells, Greg Johnson, KitchenAid and Kiwicakes for the most cupcakes baked and the most money raised. More FM is also holding a nationwide competition up until the 29th of August to find the most creative cupcake with the winner receiving a gorgeous Artisan KitchenAid Mixer worth almost $1000!

Cupcake Day is fortunate to have the support of Prime Minister John Key, politicians Simon Bridges, Nikki Kaye and Tim Shadbolt, as well as celebrities such as Nadia Lim, Joe Cotton, Annabel Fay, Martin Bosley, Pearl McGlashan and Frankie Adams. All these supporters have very kindly uploaded a video to YouTube voicing their support for SPCA Cupcake Day. The videos can be found on the spcacupcake channel on YouTube.
