New Magazine Set to Make Waves in New Zealand

New Magazine Set to Make Waves in NZ

10 Contributors are pooling their outdoor guiding, natural product & gardening experience to create a new digital magazine called It's Not about the Bugs. The first issue of this free bi weekly e-magazine is being published on September 22, 2011. The magazine will provide “how to” and inspiration on living a more natural life.

The magazine is the creation of Becky Cashman, owner of Goodbye Sandfly. The idea for it came from reading a book called Last Child in the Woods which identifies a syndrome that it named Nature Deficit Disorder. The book is a compelling call to make sure we prioritize keeping ourselves and kids connected with nature. It’s not just a bonus, being outside is critical to our health. Cashman says, “This got me thinking about how glad I was to be living in a country that still so clearly celebrates its outdoor environment. Cashman, an American who arrived in NZ in 1996, also realized that New Zealand is like many other countries, spending hours in front of computers, televisions & absolutely devoted to mobile devices. She decided to create a format that shared information as well as allowed people to find others interested in a more natural life.

Cashman came to New Zealand as a raft guide, working in Queenstown. She also spent 8 years working as a massage therapist, and her adult life as an organic gardener. Her husband John Sanderson worked for years as both a river guide and a ski patroller and then as the Snow Safety Office at the Remarkables Ski field in Queenstown. Between them they approached other professionals they had worked with to create a team of Contributors to the magazine. “Since I’ve been in NZ, I have met the most amazing, skilled, awake, alive, & generous people,” says Cashman. Details on who the Contributors are will be posted on Tuesday, Sept 20th.

To mark the launch of the magazine they are offering a KICK- START KIT Prize of seeds, merino & Goodbye Sandfly to anyone signed up for the magazine before the 1st issue.

In doing research for the magazine, a clear theme came up in a survey done in August. People are really ready to make healthy changes for themselves and their families. As witnessed in todays news, people don’t want chemicals in their baby wipes. Many of the respondents were interested in understanding how to choose good body care products, or to understand more about labeling of food. The magazine team realized that no matter where people were in their life, everyone was ready to take another step toward living more naturally. “We are all learning together, and we all benefit by working together. And that is marvelous.” Says Cashman. To sign up for the magazine & go in to the Kick Start Kit draw you can visit www.goodbyesandfly.com
