Dan Carter out of the 2011 Rugby World Cup

All Blacks playmaker Daniel Carter has been ruled out of the Rugby World Cup after suffering a serious groin injury.

A scan has revealed the 29–year–old, 85–Test All Blacks Vice-Captain has torn the adductor longus tendon in his left groin. He suffered the injury during kicking practice at the Captain’s Run training session in Wellington yesterday afternoon.

All Blacks Doctor Deb Robinson said: “The scan confirmed our worst fears, that the tendon has torn, which means he is out of the tournament.”

All Blacks Coach Graham Henry said: “We are all obviously devastated for Daniel. He has worked so hard to be at a peak for Rugby World Cup. We will rally around him and pull together as a team.”

Under the Tournament rules, the All Blacks will now seek approval to bring in a new player, with Manawatu’s Aaron Cruden to be called into the All Blacks squad.

Dr Robinson said Carter would see a specialist early next week to determine the next course of treatment for him, with surgery a possibility.

Carter was to have captained the All Blacks in today’s final Pool match against Canada. As announced yesterday, Colin Slade will start today’s Test with hooker Andrew Hore to captain the All Blacks
