GrownUps embrace online dating

Trouble finding love this Valentine’s Day? Online dating is the way of the future, according to a survey commissioned by leading 50+ community website GrownUps, with results showing 38 per cent of people have been successful in finding love online.

More than 500 kiwis from the 50+ community revealed their online dating habits in the GrownUps survey with results showing 37 per cent of people have used an online dating site in the past, and a further 21 per cent of people said they would consider it in the future.

Almost 60 per cent of respondents named the convenience of accessing sites from the comfort of your own home as the biggest pull for online dating, followed closely by the opportunity to meet a wider range of people as well as getting to know someone online before meeting them in person for the first time.

Although 75 per cent of people say they have never put anything which is not entirely true on their profile, 68 per cent were worried that others online are not always honest and this was the only factor holding people back from the online dating world.

Richard Poole, co-founder of GrownUps says the survey results indicate that internet dating is more popular than ever.

“The survey delivered some interesting results, and it’s good to see Kiwi adults are utilising the internet more than ever. GrownUps meeting forums are extremely popular, and a great way for people to meet new friends and companions through shared hobbies and interests and we know of some couples that have become friends through our site and have since become married.”

“More than 70 per cent of people agree there are online dating sites out there to cater to their needs. We have come a long way in the past few years in terms of the changing of attitudes towards the internet - 79 per cent of respondents say their friends and family would consider online dating acceptable – which is a change from 2-3 years ago,” says Richard.

Aucklanders are the most involved with the online dating world (36%) followed by Wellingtonians (11%), miles ahead of South Island internet users, with only 4 per cent of Marlborough residents saying they are interested.
