Good cuisine paired with good cause goes a long way

Good cuisine paired with good cause goes a long way

Mercure Hotel’s ‘Dine for a Cure’ initiative raises over $6,600 for Cure Kids

Cure Kids, the preferred charity of Accor’s New Zealand and Fiji hotels is set to receive a boost of more than $6,600 thanks to Mercure Hotel’s ‘Dine for a Cure’ fundraiser.

During the month of April, seven of New Zealand’s Mercure Hotels, partnered with key suppliers Lion and Tegel to create a ‘Paired to Perfection’ challenge in their restaurants; with $10 from every meal donated to Cure Kids to help fund medical research in both New Zealand and Fiji for children’s life-threatening illnesses.

Chefs from Auckland to Queenstown reveled in the challenge of using succulent free range Rangitikei corn-fed chicken breast matched with award-winning wines from the iconic Trinity Hill winery and The Ned wines.

More than 200 ‘Dine for a Cure’ meals were savoured by Vue Restaurant diners at Mercure Auckland. Chef Todd Thorburn created a sensational combination of Rangitikei corn-fed chicken breast with fresh garden herbs on kumara mash with wilted greens, slow roasted vine tomatoes and balsamic reduction; this was paired to perfection with a glass of pinot noir from the Trinity Hill winery

Further south, Mercure Wellington Willis Street Chef, Steven Lyall’s culinary creation consisted of slow roasted free range Rangitikei corn-fed chicken enveloped in a slither of smoked salmon, accompanied by a leek and tomato mousse and a marquis potato and finished with a wild mushroom and Cognac reduction; and paired to perfection with a glass of sauvignon blanc from the iconic Trinity Hill winery.

General Manager of Mercure Queenstown Resort, Paul Clark said it was fantastic to see both hotel staff and guests get behind the inaugural ‘Dine for a Cure’ fundraiser.

“Cure Kids holds a very important place in the hearts of our hotels so we were thrilled to not only see our food and beverage teams welcome the challenge with enthusiasm but also the kind support from our hotel and restaurant guests,” said Paul.

“This fundraiser was a wonderful way to come together with our suppliers Lion and Tegel and create a partnership with a purpose - to help make a difference in sick children’s lives. We look forward to holding an even bigger and better ‘Dine for a Cure’ event in the future.”

Accor has been a key partner of Cure Kids since 2003 and has raised more than $2.5million for the charity that funds medical research into the high incidence of rheumatic heart disease in New Zealand children.

The seven Mercure hotels that participated in the Cure Kids ‘Dine for a Cure’ fundraiser included Mercure Auckland, Mercure Auckland Windsor, Mercure Dunedin, Mercure Picton Marlborough Sounds, Mercure Queenstown Resort, Mercure Wellington and Mercure Wellington Willis Street.
