Te Papa’s Plan for Art Takes Shape

"Art at Te Papa has been a subject of debate for many years, something we are addressing through our strategic plans in both the short and long term," says Michael Houlihan, Chief Executive at Te Papa.

Plans for the display of Art at Te Papa have been aligned with the strategic direction and vision for the Museum. Our ambition over the coming years is to be recognised nationally and internationally, as the premier institution for visual culture in New Zealand, from its earliest expressions to the present day.

“We’re excited to be showing Michael Parekowhai’s spectacular Venice Biennale suite next month following its incredibly popular display in Christchurch.”

“In March 2013, the Level 5 Gallery space will be re-launched as part of a new model to show more of Te Papa's art collection, more often, through a dynamic exhibition programme. This will allow our collections to spend more time on display and provide an opportunity to expand Te Papa’s successful touring exhibitions so it is seen by more of the country.”

In the long term, a key strategic priority is to increase access to the art collections.
