Auckland writer succeeds in international competition

Point Chevalier writer / director / producer Richard Green’s script is one of only 50 selected from more than 1800 worldwide entries for a competition to be included in a unique feature film, called 50 Kisses.

Part of the London Screenwriter’s Festival, the competition required the contestants to write to the theme “what does love mean to you?”. Writers were restricted to keeping their script to 2 pages in length, setting it on Valentines Day, and including at least one kiss in their story.

Green’s entry, The Last Supper, sees a homeless man give up his last connection with his past to enable himself and his wife to enjoy a romantic dinner.

“It was hard to contain the narrative to 2 pages. Trying to convey what was in my mind took some serious editing” says Green, “but I think the result works and its simplicity and uniqueness was the reason it was chosen”.

One of the selectors emailed Green to say he thought his script was a “breath of fresh air” amongst the entries, “and really pulled off a bittersweet socially conscious story”.

Green intends, along with a crew, to shoot the film himself and enter it in the next stage of the competition. The 50 best-shot versions of each script will be strung together to make the film, which will be released in the UK in February 2013.

Richard Green has previously had international success with his short film, Te Whare, which won 3 international awards and was shown at 9 international film festivals.
