Travels with My Economist by Lisa Scott

Travels with My Economist by Lisa Scott

Hilarious, pithy and poignant, Travels With My Economist is an elephant ride of a book.

Lisa Scott’s debut, Travels with my Economist perfectly captures the absolute hell and pure joys of spending six months in India. Her irreverent, laugh-out-loud tales of living and travelling in the sub-continent introduces a stand-out new voice to the travel book genre.

Trading the quiet back streets of Dunedin for the heat and chaos of Bangalore, southern India, Lisa and her economist experience everything from dinner parties with India's new elite to dire Delhi-belly, and everything in-between. From simply surviving crossing the road or the jam-packed buses, bikini waxes and close encounters of the worst kind, not to mention observations on such holy cows as, well, holy cows, bride suicides, female infanticide and the dowry question — all told in Lisa’s inimitable style - this is India, warts and all.

Woven throughout is the story of Lisa’s relationship with the marriage-shy economist. Living up to the tight-fisted reputation of his ilk, we never do find out his name, and you’ll have to read the book to find out whether he does, finally, pop the question...

If you like reading Bill Bryson, Paul Theroux or Joe Bennett you’ll love Lisa Scott’s Travels with My Economist

When LISA SCOTT returned from the Middle East in 2009 to discover all the jobs were gone, she decided to become a writer. Since then, her work has garnered several national awards, including a Qantas for Humour/satire in 2010 and Magazine Publishers’ Association Journalist of the Year (Lifestyle) in 2011. As well as her regular columns for the Otago Daily Times (Tales from the Powder Room) and Next magazine (Last Laugh), Lisa writes features for North & South and NZ Life & Leisure. Last we heard, she was still living with the economist in Dunedin's Crime Triangle.
