Will NZ’s Top Tourist Spots Be Bowled Over In Final AA 101’s

Media Release

Will NZ’s Top Tourist Spots Be Bowled Over In Final AA 101’s List?

Auckland, November 1 2012 - Three weeks into the voting period for AA Tourism’s 101 Must-Do’s List and a staggering 154,000 votes have been cast resulting in some surprise contenders for the top spots.

Although tight lipped about the specifics of current rankings, GM Marketing for AA Tourism, Rebecca Cherry has indicated that the current top 10 rankings are split evenly between North and South Island attractions. She has also hinted at some left field newcomers currently sitting high up on the list above what most consider New Zealand’s top ranking tourist attractions.

One example she cited was Wairere Boulders, in Northland which has received an astounding number of votes. Proof Ms Cherry says of the enthusiasm of Northland voters. She is keen to encourage other regions to rally support lest they are bowled over by newcomers to this important list.

“The AA Tourism 101 Must Do’s List is all about encouraging conversation around the fantastic travel options we have in our own backyard. We have received over 200 suggestions for additional attractions to the current voting menu of 1600 and that proves that people are passionate about domestic travel, making our campaign a success even before the final votes are counted.”

Another newcomer to the current top 10 is WOMAD, the popular Taranaki festival. Ms Cherry also cited two spa destinations (one from each island) currently straddling the top 10 rankings all of which are a departure from the original 2006 list which was dominated by scenic attractions.

“Those destinations garnering massive votes have embraced social media. Waterworks in Coromandel has even offered a free entry day to supporters if they make the final list. It’s not too late for others vying for the top spots to do the same,”says Ms Cherry.

With attractions nationwide rallying for votes in the final weeks before voting closes on 15 November, it’s anyone’s guess how the final AA Tourism 101 Must-Do’s List will be ranked when winners are revealed on 25 November.

Multiple voting is as easy as visiting www.aatravel.co.nz/101 or playing the Spin & Win Facebook game at www.facebook.com/welovenz

In addition to supporting their favourite ‘Must-Do’ attraction or destination, voters go into the draw to win the Ultimate Kiwi Holiday valued at $10,000.
