Classical Expressions 2013

‘Virtuoso’ is the key word to describe the musicians performing in the Classical Expressions 2013 series at Expressions Arts & Entertainment Centre in Upper Hutt. Three world-class pianists, an international violinist, and one of New Zealand's foremost music ensembles will present five concerts in Upper Hutt this year.

A leading arts programme which has run over the last 8 years ,with sell our shows , Classical Expression has become a landmark in the arts calendar. The programme has been curated by Artistic Director Roger Lloyd who was previously Artistic Manager of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, General Manager of the Wellington Sinfonia and Manager of the New Zealand String Quartet. Lloyd says the invitation to audience is to “hear stunning music and famous works performed by outstanding international and New Zealand artists… and feel your spirits soar.”

The season starts on 8 April with Azerbaijani pianist, Oleg Marshev, a frequent visitor to New Zealand. He makes his Expressions debut with a collection of captivating, French sound pictures by Debussy, his second set of Preludes, and Mussorgsky’s great Russian display piece, Pictures at an Exhibition.

In 2012 Sergey Malov enjoyed a national tour with pianist Michael Houstoun as part of his prize for winning the 2011 Michael Hill International Violin Competition. This year he returns with a winning recital programme of some of J.S. Bach's best solo works. In his 'Bach on 13 Strings' concert on 7 June, Malov will play his Stradivarius violin and also a viola and a baroque, 5-string violoncello di spalla.
