Rebooted SOUNZ Centre for New Zealand Music.

FRESH NEW SOUNZ

Introducing a refreshed, revitalised, rebooted SOUNZ Centre for New Zealand Music.

SOUNZ Centre for New Zealand Music has just revealed a new brand to reflect their revised mission and activities.

“We're very proud to present our refreshed organisation and new-look website as they represent a process of intense soul searching and satisfying hard work over the past eighteen months.” Says Julie Sperring, SOUNZ Executive Director. “Over that time we looked closely at how to focus our resources in the best way possible on behalf of New Zealand music.”

Charitable Trust SOUNZ is a music information centre that promotes the music of New Zealand composers. It runs an extensive collection of recordings, scores, and audiovisual resources available online to watch, hear, borrow and buy at sounz.org.nz. SOUNZ is a key champion of New Zealand music, encouraging it's performance, capture and broadcast around the globe.

SOUNZ Board Chair, Elizabeth Kerr says "After two decades of energetic activity, SOUNZ has made exciting plans for the future. Our fresh new brand is just one way we're signalling a new curatorial focus, through which we'll make sure that the wonderful music of our composers continues to surprise and delight audiences at home and internationally."

Julie Sperring continues “Our new mission statement, that we refer to daily, incorporates three overarching objectives - to Collect, Curate and Connect: To champion the music of Aotearoa/New Zealand by collecting and curating resources and connecting them with audiences.”

“Once we knew where we were going the next step was to create a brand look and feel to reflect the dynamic music that we represent. Brand experts Strategy Design & Advertising chose the basic element of music itself, a sound wave – which also emulates the undulating water and landscapes of our country. Strategy created a contemporary and flexible image and design, by using a crisp modern green and a wave graphic.”

Revised activities include a monthly showcase on a different aspect of New Zealand music via the SOUNZ main homepage feature. This allows SOUNZ to champion organisations who are presenting New Zealand music, and work with them to profile the music and composers in their programmes. The opening feature is built around the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra's Organ Spectacular concert.

Julie Sperring adds “Focusing on the APO Organ Spectacular also gave us an opportunity to curate the New Zealand organ music we already have in the collection by way of repertoire lists and listening suggestions.”

“Another exciting development this year has come about through the Resound project, which has been going for three years and has resulted in a huge amount of recorded material being made available online for free. This year a new phase of Resound has allowed us to capture concerts on film with the aim of making them available for online streaming.”

SOUNZ receives major funding from Creative New Zealand, NZ On Air, the Lilburn Trust, APRA and through PPNZ.
