Reflecting on disaster

Architects, artists, and designers will come together this week to present projects that imaginatively reflect on the consequences of natural disasters.

The symposium After the Event, co-hosted by the Adam Art Gallery and Victoria University’s School of Architecture, is a response to the Adam Art Gallery’s current exhibition All There is Left.

On Friday 9 August, Joseph Becker, Assistant Curator of Architecture and Design at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, will deliver the keynote lecture at Victoria’s Faculty of Architecture and Design. He will discuss the work of visionary architect Lebbeus Woods (1940–2012), whose architectural drawings endeavour to embrace violent change.

On Saturday 10 August, guest speakers—Ian Athfield, Barnaby Bennett, Jeanette Budgett, Philippe Campays, Gavin Hipkins, Andrew Just, Sarah Treadwell, Simon Twose, John Walsh and Camia Young—will present projects and discuss what they offer as responses to disaster.

“A number of the speakers will focus on the rebuilding of Christchurch, but the symposium will also provoke wider discussion about the nature of cities and public space in New Zealand,” says Adam Art Gallery curator Michelle Menzies.
