No Naughty Bits

No Naughty Bits

By Steven Thompson
Directed by ROSS JOLLY

MONTY PYTHON
v American Broadcasting Company

A gloriously funny re-imagining of a real-life event, No Naughty Bits illuminates and celebrates the comic genius of Monty Python.

The New Zealand première
Opens in CIRCA ONE
Saturday 10th August 8pm

December 1975: Monty Python’s Flying Circus is an icon of British humor, loved by millions. And now the show is set to air coast to coast on American TV networks … but someone has cut out all the naughty bits!
Outraged, Pythons Michael Palin and Terry Gilliam take a plane, take a lawyer, and take on the networks in court – to try to keep the naughty bits in!

Playwright Steve Thompson, was by amazing coincidence, reading Michael Palin’s published diaries when the Hampstead Theatre in London offered him a commission. The bizarre court case that took place in New York in 1975 had until then been a forgotten episode in the history of humour, but to Thompson who worked a lot in television (Sherlock, Silk, Doctor Who) the absurdities of the clash of sexual mores, the differing senses of humour, and the complex misunderstandings implicit in the Anglo-American relationship were a perfect opportunity to have some fun, while making some serious points about freedom of expression, artistic integrity and the elusive brilliance of laugh-out-loud comedy.
