Goldner String Quartet and Piers Lane Tour New Zealand

Goldner String Quartet and Piers Lane Tour New Zealand

Award-winning Australian ensemble Goldner String Quartet and pianist Piers Lane head to New Zealand on a 10 centre tour in September and October as part of the Chamber Music New Zealand 2013 ‘Kaleidoscopes’ season.

The Goldner String Quartet and Piers Lane begin their tour in Nelson on Saturday 21 September before heading to Christchurch, Dunedin, Invercargill, Palmerston North, Napier, Wellington, Hamilton, Auckland and New Plymouth. The Christchurch concert is part of Christchurch Arts Festival 2013.

Immensely popular on both sides of the Tasman, the Goldner String Quartet and pianist Piers Lane have won numerous accolades for their recordings including both Gramophone and BBC Music Magazine’s Editor’s Choice.

“It’s a joy to have such a close relationship with a quartet I admire and love. Your ears will hum with delight,” says Piers Lane.

The programme for all 10 concerts includes a new commission from well-known New Zealand composer Gareth Farr. His new work Te Tai-O-Rehua (The Tasman Sea) reflects upon the turbulent body of water that separates New Zealand from Australia.

“One of the inevitable things about the process of creating a piece of music is that whatever inspiration you begin with, the piece will ultimately take over and tell you what it is.

“I intended to write a happy and joyous piece because that's the way I feel about my relationship with Australia as a New Zealander – particularly after being composer in residence for the Australian Music Centre in 2005 - but the music came out dark, mysterious, and edgy. "What am I saying here?" I suddenly asked myself! After some thought, I realised that I was writing about the sea, as I so often do - and the analogy of the body of water that is the only thing that separates us came to me.”

Gareth adds that composing the work for the Goldner String Quartet took him back to where he started 20 years ago, with Owhiro – one of his first professional commissions written as part of his residency with Chamber Music New Zealand.

“String quartet has always been one of my favourite media to work in, as I love the possibility for 'discussion' between the players in the music - it's like a really interesting dinner party for four people!”

The programmes also feature Franck and Elgar quintets, Schubert’s thrilling ‘Death and the Maiden’ and Mendelssohn’s lovely A minor quartet.

The Goldner String Quartet and Piers Lane tour to 10 New Zealand centres from Saturday 21 September to Saturday 5 October. For more information and to book tickets visit www.chambermusic.co.nz
