Robson looks to secure championship position

Lee Robson is looking for a steady but fast approach at the final round of the Rally Xtreme series, the 10th anniversary Possum Bourne Memorial Rally, which runs just south of Auckland this weekend.

Currently sitting second in the XT1 class for pre-2000 four-wheel drive cars, Robson needs a strong finish to guarantee that position in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 4.

Both Robson and co-driver Glenn Goldring enjoy the roads in the Maramarua Forest that make up the morning’s gravel stages and have scored good results there in the past, including fifth overall and the XT1 win at the season opening Maramarua Rally, but will need to balance speed with the need for a strong finish with the championship runner-up spot on the line.

Also adding to the challenge will be four tarmac stages around the Hampton Downs and Pukekohe racetracks as well as Ardmore Quarry Road. Although not largely experienced on Tarmac, Robson is looking forward to the challenge.

With the event being close to Auckland and relatively simple to spectate, Robson expects to see large numbers of spectators lining the stages, something that always encourages him to push just that little bit harder.

“It’s a bit of a tough one for us, we really want to go quick as we always do when we get in the car, but the priority is to take second in the championship,” says Robson. “It would also be really good to grab a top result on what is essentially our home rally.”

The 10th Anniversery Possum Bourne Memorial Rally kicks off in the town of Pukekohe at 7am, with close to 100km of gravel stages before completing a further 28km of tarmac prior to the finish at Pukekohe Park Raceway just after 5pm.
