Masterton teen clocks up another country, another win
Masterton teenager Dylan McGruddy has made a successful start to a Northern Hemisphere shearing career by winning the Balmoral Show’s All Nations intermediate final in Northern Ireland..
It was the third different country in which the 18-year-old McGruddy has won in two years, having won previously one the Taumarunui Jamboree junior final in New Zealand in 2012, the Yallunda Flats intermediate final in South Australia last October, and the Lumsden and Otago intermediate titles in January and February in New Zealand.
He started to learn to shear at the age of nine, and first competed in the famed Golden Shears International Championships in Masterton as a novice grade competitor aged 13.
McGruddy is currently working a few weeks in Lincolnshire, England, but will be competing next week in the Irish All-Nations events which kick-start the 16th Golden Shears World Championships starting in Gorey, Ireland, next Thursday.
McGruddy shore Friday’s six sheep in 8min 11sec, more than a sheep shed of nearest rival James Penney, of Northern Ireland, and while lacking a little in finished quality still won by more than 2pts.
