Free conservation-focused app gets free entry to Zealandia tomorrow

With all the different games and apps available today it can be difficult to entice kids to get outside and connect with the beautiful green spaces Wellington region has on offer.
Habitat the Game is a new and exciting app that encourages children to think about conservation and sustainability. In a Tamagotchi-style game, you keep a polar bear alive and healthy through virtual tasks and real-life conservation efforts.

Wellington is the first city in New Zealand to be offered the opportunity to partner with the popular game. This has been a collaborative effort between DOC, Wellington City Council, Zealandia, Greater Wellington Regional Council, The Wellington Zoo and Pukaha Mt Bruce, who all believe it’s important to get children and their families out and learning about our surrounding environment.

Mayor Celia Wade-Brown, who will officially launch the initiative tomorrow (Saturday) at Zealandia, is excited about the new platform. “Not only does this app connect our young people locally to our green spaces it also connects Wellington on an international level to our global conservation story and that is definitely something worth showcasing.”

There are 16 virtual pins of species found in their natural habitats located in and around the Wellington region. Habitat the Game is available on Apple smart devices and on Android devices through Google Play.

Habitat the Game launches 11am–3pm, Saturday 4 October at Zealandia.

Free entry will be given to kids who have downloaded the free app and the first 100 adults. There will also be loads of spot prizes and activities, so come on down for a great day with the whole family.
