Wotif Travel Specialist Kirsty La Bruniy said the survey of more than 3,300 New Zealand travellers revealed almost one in eight have a flying ritual.

“From the 12% of Kiwi travellers who revealed they have a flying habit, there was a mix of interesting rituals, from wearing a particular item of clothing on every flight to doing exactly the same routine on board every time,” Ms La Bruniy said.

“Traveller confessions included admitting they must wear track pants when boarding a long haul flight, arranging magazines in the seat pocket and taking a snuggle pillow on their flight.

Some of the most interesting flying habits revealed by travellers:

1. Wear new underwear

2. On international flights I always wear travel socks

3. As we are taking off I lift my feet up off the floor until we start levelling out then they go back on the floor.

4. Wear my pounamu

5. Get changed into track suit pants when boarded on a long haul flight

Ms La Bruniy said plenty of travellers have a seat preference with 64% of Kiwis revealing their favourite seat choice.

“If you’re wondering why it always seems like the window seats are the first to sell out on a busy flight, it’s because they are the most popular seat with more than one in three (35%) of Kiwi travellers revealing ‘they must sit in a window seat’.

“The second most popular choice is sitting in an aisle seat (32%). It seems fewer people want to sit in the middle (3%) or in the back row (2%).”

• 34.8% it must be a window seat

• 32.2% I like to sit in an aisle seat

• 16.8% in the emergency exit row

• 3.3% somewhere in the middle, but not the emergency exit row

• 2.1% anywhere in the back row
