Chamber celebrates 150 years of Wellington as the capital

Chamber celebrates 150 years of Wellington as the nation’s capital

Wellington Employers’ Chamber of Commerce says Wellingtonians should all celebrate with pride the city’s 150th birthday this weekend.

Chief Executive John Milford said the city and surrounding region had done itself proud in rising from shacks on mud-filled streets to be a truly modern city that competes with the best in a vastly changed and evolving world.

“Those of us who live here do so because we love it, and so we should celebrate it.

“It’s down to the early settlers and later the more modern-day business pioneers who we should be tipping our hats to and saying thanks. They have all played their part in building this very fine city.

“While we’re more than a government town, it’s at the heart of so much of what we do and well worth celebrating this weekend.

“The saying ‘you can’t beat Wellington on a good day’ holds as true today as I’m sure it did 150 years ago when the potential was realised and we became the capital city.”
