Spring art show explodes with colour

Spring art show explodes with colour

The Spring theme of ‘new life from old’ can be found in artwork by Angela Singer in her exhibition,Familiaris, opening 17 September at 30 Upstairs Gallery, Wellington.

Bright colourful spring flowers cling to and cover a running vintage taxidermy fox, frozen mid-stride.

A bejewelled vintage taxidermy pheasant sprouts from a verdant hilltop mound of sparkling green.

A small white vintage lamb head is covered in spring ice, snow and flowers.

The spring regeneration theme can also be found in the technique of Singer’s hand-stitched needlework where the political and kitsch overlap.

The works have timely subjects referencing current debates around cats attacking and killing native species, and the rise in dog attacks on humans and cats.

Reworking the traditional patterns of vintage needlepoint she depicts ‘more realistic’ images of human/animal and animal/animal relationships: the noble dog, sweet cat, cute perched bird and serene flying duck become shot duck falling from sky, cat attacking bird, cat hunting at night, dog hunting and attacking cat, and turning the tables, birds attacking cat.

This is the first time that Wellington artist Angela Singer has shown her art in Wellington, with her recent exhibitions being held in New York, Paris, Berlin and London. Later this year she will exhibit her art in the inaugural exhibition of the new Museum of Animals and Society in Los Angeles. A book has recently been published to accompany this exhibition.
