Special Guests to attend ASB Polyfest today

The ASB Polyfest is hosting a special function today, with guests including Prime Minister – John Key.

Attending an official ASB Polyfest function in the Greyhound Lounge at the Manukau Sports Bowl at noon, Prime Minister John Key will address those in attendance. Other MPs in heading along include the Minister for Pacific Peoples, Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga.

Joining Prime Minister John Key to speak is Chairman of the ASB Polyfest Trust Patrick Drumm, Samoan Stage Co-ordinator Toesulu Brown, ASB Polyfest Event Director Theresa Howard and Managing Principal for ASB Securities (Wealth & Insurance) Angela Busby.

After the function, Prime Minister John Key will head to the AUT Cook Islands Stage to meet members of the Cook Islands community and to address the Cook Island stage audience.

The ASB Polyfest will be alive today with Maori and Pacific Island colour and culture. The Te Whare Wanaga o Awanuiarangi Maori Stage has the Division 2 kapa haka competition from 8:00am – 5:00pm with 15 schools vying to be promoted to Division One next year.

The University of Auckland Samoan Stage has 18 groups on stage from 8:30am – 5:00pm, the drums will be beating on the AUT Cook Islands Stage with seven groups on stage from 9:15am – 2:30pm, the Massey University Tongan Stage features 36 traditional Tongan dances such as the Ma’ulu’ulu and Kailao from 8:30am – 4.30pm. The MIT Niue Stage has nine groups on stage from 9:00am – 3:00pm today, including defending champions Tangaroa College at 2:30pm.

The ACG Diversity Stage is also in full swing today with forty different ethnic groups on stage. The main culture represented on the ACG Diversity Stage is Indian with twenty-two groups, followed by Fijian performances with seven groups, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Filipino cultures will be represented with five groups each, and four African groups will also take part.

Other groups appearing on the ACG Diversity Stage today include Tuvaluan, Hawaiian, Middle Eastern and Thai.

“With more than 9,000 Auckland students taking part, ASB Polyfest 2016 is a wonderful cultural event for people of all ages,” ASB Head of Community and Sponsorship Mark Graham says.

“ASB began its sponsorship of Polyfest 32 years ago and we’re thrilled to remain a big part of the festival today. As one of our longest and most-treasured partnerships, we are continually proud to be associated with ASB Polyfest,” Mr Graham says.

ASB Polyfest 2016 takes place at the ASB Sports Bowl from Wednesday 16 March to Saturday, 19 March. Entry is $5, with pre-school children free of charge.
