Celebrate Prince

39 studio albums, numerous name changes, virtuosic skills on multiple instruments and an effortlessly wide vocal range. Prince was truly a musician like no other – even Miles Davis called him a genius.

Born in Minneapolis, Prince released his first album in 1978, producing, arranging, composing and playing all 27 instruments. Universal critical acclaim only came after his second and third albums, however, when he mastered his idiosyncratic blend of pop, funk, R&B and soul, combining melodic catchiness with overt eroticism.

A string of successes followed, until his first album with his band The Revolution, Purple Rain. This soundtrack album is widely regarded as not only one of the greatest albums of the 1980s, but one of the best albums ever. The consistent quality of his output continued throughout the decade, helping to define the sound of the ‘80s.

Prince was a constant innovator, forming new bands, working with fellow superstars and defying genres. His name changes, most notably to an unpronounceable symbol, only added to the mystique and aura surrounding this enigmatic musician.
