Auckland artist Cathy Carter to Exhibit in New York City this May!

NEW YORK, NY – Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature the original work of Auckland artist Cathy Carter in Out From Down Under & Beyond: Fine Art from Australia & New Zealand. The exhibition opens on May 20th, 2016 and runs through June 9th, 2016 with an opening reception on May 26th, from 6 – 8PM. Any art lover who enjoys thought-provoking artworks and meeting talented and interesting artists is encouraged to attend.

About the Artist

Cathy Carter's work explores the physical aspects and considerations of water: how underwater spaces affect perception, the immensity of ocean landscapes, and the peculiar structural characteristics of liquid, alongside more symbolic concerns. In her photographs, liquid fields and ocean landscapes are contextualized, metaphorically and physically, within the long history of human development. Carter's keen focus helps convey a sense of otherworldliness in water as a medium and the ocean as geographical feature. In her works, swimmers provide a human context to convey the simultaneously terrifying and comforting ways in which water envelops and contains people.
According to Carter, “Water can be thought of as a space of ‘becoming made visible,’ an impermanent space, ephemeral and fluctuating.” With this philosophy, Carter uses her photography to also explore the human experience, focusing on what is ephemeral in our own lives. She makes us think of what is both foreign and familiar. In the end, Carter's photography not only captures spaces, but it also creates spaces for the viewer to consider the fluidity and possibilities of our own lives.

About the Exhibition

G’day For Art in NYC

The rich contemporary art scene of Australia and New Zealand gets its due in Agora Gallery’s spring show Out From Down Under & Beyond: Fine Art from Australia & New Zealand. Featuring six extraordinary artists of all ages and disciplines, this exhibition offers a survey on what cutting edge work looks like on the other side of the world.

Photographers explore the unique land – and just as importantly, water – that surrounds them, obscuring and revealing different layers in turn. Surrealist painters bring out the brightest and most hallucinatory of colors in the atmosphere, and render everyday scenes beautiful in their graphic simplicity. Pure abstraction is also represented in painting, with spirited textures and haunting shadows combining in unfamiliar ways. The styles showcased flow from lush to spare; like the region it represents, the work is extraordinarily varied and always exciting. When what one group considers exotic is what another considers to be everyday, a new kind of visual language is born. Bringing these different perspectives to light and starting a dialogue with viewers is something the art world does singularly well.
