Massive numbers for Lego exhibition

Nearly 14,000 people have been to see and help build the Lego exhibition with still a month to go – 6000 more than expected for the whole of the exhibition period.

It is being hailed a “massive success”, by Hastings City Art Gallery director Toni MacKinnon.

By the end of Thursday (July 28) 13,810 people had been into the gallery in the 55 days it had been open so far.

Over the two July school holiday weeks 6139 people had visited to the gallery, compared to 1439 over the same school holiday period last year.

‘It’s been really fantastic. The interactive nature of the exhibition has proved to be a real drawcard and we are really rapt to see so many people enjoying it,” MacKinnon said.

“Word has spread like wildfire and the numbers have been astronomical - we expected 8000 people to see the exhibition and with a month to go we’re already at nearly 14,000.

“That is a huge number of people, and many of them, particularly the children, may never have been into an art gallery before so we’re hoping they’ll be back for other exhibitions.”

The cubic structural evolution project, the brainchild of Danish artist Olafur Eliasson, is made and remade by the viewers from 50,000 pieces of white Lego. It opened on June 4th and will close on August 28.

Hastings was just the latest in a long line of cities across the world that had hosted the exhibition; from Albania, Oslo and New York, to Denmark, Copenhagen and Wellington.
