MIXIT returns with This Way Out

Media Release: For Immediate Release

DANCE, DRAMA, STORYTELLING & DESIGN COME TO LIFE IN A STEAMY INDUSTRIAL SHED

Mixit presents
THIS WAY OUT
A magical messy tale of boldness, barter and deals

On January 20 and 21 2017, Mixit presents a tale of everyday heroes, who are dancing in the face of challenges to overcome the odds. Where they are going and what they are hoping to find is a mystery – one the audience at Shed 2, Corban Estate Arts Centre, Henderson, can help to solve by joining their journey. It’s an unexpected twist on a classic Pick-A-Path quest.

Can a group of everyday heroes complete a quest armed with only their charm, tricks, stories and wit?

Mixit is a yearlong arts project that uses creativity to support young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds - mixing it up with the locals. Every summer Mixit mounts an annual highlight performance project with a colourful, multi-cultural cast led by a stellar crew of inter-disciplinary professional artists. It’s always packed with laughter and celebration, always unexpected and always inspirational.

A cast of 25 young people aged from 13 – 25 years from a wild assortment of backgrounds and experiences, will work together over two weeks to create and present a performance event that crosses territories, laughs in the face of adversity and edge walks between the everyday and the mythic. Guiding them through this process is a creative team that includes, director Wendy Preston (Mixit Founder), theatre director Tahi Mapp-Borren (graduate of Toi Whakaari), choreographer Chris Jannides (movement tutor at Toi Whakaari) and designer Sarah-Jane Blake (artist, theatre designer and maker).

“Mixit activities and performances demonstrate both passion and joy, but most importantly how through a common vision and purpose people can learn and live together, acknowledging and understanding our cultural differences” - Dame Susan Devoy NZ Race Relations Commissioner.

“Mixit has been supporting young people in the community using creativity for over 10 years. It’s a powerful, transformational and joyous process, which provides an important platform to build stronger communities and mentor the young leaders of the future. We have an inspiring artistic leadership team stepping up this summer to work with an exciting crew of participants, youth leaders and creative interns” - Wendy Preston – Mixit Project Producer/Director.

This Way Out is a performance event that shines a light on a multi-cultural mix of youthful dreams and possibilities, surprising action and unexpected adventure. It’s a glorious, celebratory mash up of art forms, style, diversity and creative chaos.

“Totally beautiful to see these talented young people putting their passion into this. I love watching Mixit and supporting the impact it has on families and communities – it makes my heart sing” - Audience feedback TEN Festival Jan 2017.
