Roger Hall’s Last Legs Strikes a Chord with Audiences

As the New Zealand population lives longer, the issue of retirement options is taking centre stage, which could account for the extraordinary success of Roger Hall’s latest play Last Legs. Set in a retirement village, the play had a sell-out World Premiere season at Circa Theatre in September this year and will have a return season in January 2017.

The focus on kiwis living longer in retirement hit exactly the right note with audiences. It was the year’s fastest booking show at Circa Theatre, achieving a 94% fill rate in record time.

Almost half of older New Zealanders live for some time in residential villages, so seeing these residents interacting on stage, accurately reflects life choices for many of us. Audiences of Last Legs felt this newest Roger Hall, as with so many of his other plays, shows a very real slice of NZ life. They responded strongly to the fact that the play felt relevant and relatable, with comments such as, “a totally relatable story”, “a clever take on Retirement”, “totally relevant”, “it struck a chord”, “Roger Hall hit the head on a topical issue”, “most appreciated the reality of it” and “very pertinent and realistic”.

Of the play’s success, director Ross Jolly says, “this is my fifth Roger Hall production and I am constantly astounded at his uncanny ability to strike a chord with his audience. They trust the Hall brand, and will happily book well in advance, confident of a darn good night out. Yet again Roger Hall invites us to empathise, celebrate and laugh.”

Winner of the 2016 Wellingtonian of the Year Award for the Arts Category, Ray Henwood will again star in the return season, joined by the same cast of acclaimed, award winning actors.
