Local & international speaking gigs landed by Shelly Davies

Writing trainer and plain language advocate lands local and international speaking gigs

Hamilton writing trainer and plain language advocate Shelly Davies has just been named in the TEDx Tauranga line-up.

The announcement comes as she prepares to fly to Austria where she will be speaking at the Plain Language Association’s international conference next month and comes hot on the heels of her well-received talk at Pecha Kucha earlier this month.

It’s a real coup to be chosen to speak in Graz at the Plain Language Conference, and Shelly thrives on being part of the international conversation about writing that works.

And Shelly’s looking forward to TEDx in October where she will talk about why she believes the formal voice is dead.

“I like to challenge people in business to break with tradition, and use modern approaches to writing. I’m a disrupter, and I’ll call out anyone who isn’t communicating in their authentic voice.”

Shelly wowed the audience at Hamilton’s Pecha Kucha, as part of Wintec’s Spark Week, with her story about “saying yes” and where that’s taken her.

“I’ve lived through dead husbands, depression, divorce and diets, so it was always going to be enthralling,” Shelly laughed.

It’s a wonder Shelly’s schedule leaves room for speaking engagements. Often up at 4am to clear emails, she also juggles her corporate training business, mentors businesswomen throughout the country, organises whānau and mokopuna, and takes the lead in various governance roles.

“This year I challenged myself to do more public speaking, so I’m stoked to have these gigs lined up over the next few months,” she said.

A self-confessed natural born entertainer, Shelly relishes having an audience, so the move from English teacher to corporate trainer and keynote was a natural progression.

“I dare anyone to try to fall asleep when I’m presenting!”

Shelly’s training style is unique and fierce.

Her corporate client list comprises some of the top performers on the NZX 50 Index – ASB, Air New Zealand, BP, BECA, and Vector. Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, The Sir Peter Blake Trust, Bay of Plenty Regional Council and the Ministry for the Environment also call on Shelly to work in-house with their teams.
