90-Year-Old Marbecks Record Store To Close Queens Arcade Store, Continuing As A Premier Online Music Destination
September 1st, 2025 : Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland,
NZ
After more than nine decades in the iconic Queens
Arcade, Marbecks, one of Aotearoa’s most
treasured music retailers, will be closing the doors of its
physical store. The beloved retailer, however, is far from
saying goodbye. Marbecks will continue to operate online,
offering its exceptional range of new releases, timeless
catalogues, and the extensive classical collection that
music lovers have come to trust.
The move to an online platform marks the beginning of a new chapter for Marbecks, ensuring that customers across the motu can continue to access the best in music, delivered straight to their door. Plans are also underway for special Marbecks pop-up events at festivals and music gatherings around the country, keeping the spirit of the store alive for fans who love the in-person experience.
Founding family member Roger Marbeck says the decision reflects the changing ways people discover and enjoy music, while staying true to the Marbecks' tradition of quality and passion, “Marbecks has been a home for music lovers for over 90 years in Queens Arcade, and while closing our physical doors is bittersweet, our mission remains the same – to share music that inspires and brings people together. The online store lets us carry that legacy forward in a way that reaches more people than ever.”
Longtime
Marbecks Store Manager Sandra Hopping
adds:
“It’s been a privilege to welcome
generations of music fans through our doors. We’ve seen
people grow up with Marbecks from buying their very first
album to curating their lifelong collections. While I’ll
miss seeing those familiar faces in person, I’m excited
for this next stage and the chance to keep serving our
community in new ways.”
For decades, Marbecks has been a cornerstone of Auckland’s music culture, known for its knowledgeable staff, carefully curated collections, and the sense of discovery it brought to music fans. Moving online represents both a continuation of this legacy and an opportunity to evolve with the changing retail landscape.
With the move to an online-only model, Marbecks simply can’t take all of its stock with them. To celebrate its time in Queens Arcade, and give fans a last chance to browse in person, a huge final sale begins today, Monday, 1st September.
Marbecks’ full range is now available at www.marbecks.co.nz, with delivery direct to music lovers’ doors. 25% off everything in stock (excluding gift vouchers, new releases and customer orders).
Marbecks members will get first dibs with special online offers now and in the future. It’s not too late to sign up and enjoy early access – simply visit https://www.marbecks.co.nz/newsletters/
