Student fees frozen at 104 tertiary providers

MEDIA RELEASE 16 June 2000

Student fees frozen at 104 tertiary education providers after Budget offer

"We applaud the Government's efforts to keep costs down for students by offering extra funding to tertiary education providers that keep their fees at the same level next year. We have contacted PTEs about the offer and 104 have said that they are likely to accept the offer in the last day," says Raewyn Idoine, executive member of the New Zealand Association of Private Education Providers (NZAPEP). "We expect that many more PTEs will take up the offer, giving their students some relief over fee increases."

"This action by the Government is a good example of how pragmatic solutions can be developed between Government and the tertiary education sector. We look forward to more co-operation with Ministers and the Tertiary Education Advisory Commission in the future."

104 private tertiary establishments (PTEs) have told NZAPEP that they are likely to freeze their fees for next year in return for the Government's offer of extra funding. The Government has offered an increase in funding of 2.3% for those tertiary education providers that keep their fees at the same level. Those who raise their fees will get the same funding per student as in 2000.

NZAPEP is the largest national association of private training establishments registered with NZQA. Its 130 members enrol over half of the PTE students in New Zealand.
