Statistics New Zealand Pacific Peoples Scholar Announced

Statistics New Zealand is delighted to announce Mark Treviranus as the recipient of the 2002 Pacific Peoples Scholarship. The annual scholarship, which is awarded for tertiary study to pursue a qualification relevant to the work of Statistics New Zealand, is available to assist an indigenous person of Pacific peoples descent. It is valued at $3,500 per annum for up to three years.

"I was excited by the calibre and ability of all the applicants who participated in this process," said Government Statistician, Brian Pink. "I would like to wish Mark well with his future studies."

Mark is in his first year of study at Massey University and is majoring in maths and statistics. He is a fluent Samoan speaker and an active sportsman.

The scholarship programme seeks to increase the number of Pacific peoples with a qualification relevant to the work of Statistics New Zealand and thereby available for employment in the department. Paid vacation work is also available to the recipient, who is expected to spend a minimum of six weeks per year working at Statistics New Zealand.
