Stratford principal, Kelvin Squire, has today honoured for her contribution to education.
He was made an Associate of the country’s largest education union, NZEI Te Riu Roa at awards ceremony in Wellington.
NZEI Te Riu Roa has 42,000 members and represents teachers and principals in primary schools, teachers in early childhood education centres, support staff in primary and secondary schools, special education staff in primary and secondary schools and advisers in the tertiary sector.
The awards were presented by Bruce Adin, NZEI Te Riu Roa National President, at the opening of the union’s 120th Annual Meeting in Wellington. They are given in recognition of the members contribution to education and the union.
“This award acknowledges a commitment to excellence in education,” says Bruce Adin.
“It is given in recognition for the hard work the member done to support their colleagues and to help the students they work with.”
Kelvin Squire is principal of Stratford Primary School, which has 396 students and 26 staff. He began his teacher career 29 years ago at Lyttelton Wst School. He then moved to the West Coast and taught at Cobden, Greymouth Main, and Blaketown schools in Greymouth. In 1980 he was appointed principal at Lake Brunner School. In 1984 he moved to Manawatu as principal of Rangiwahia School in Kimbolton. In 1986 Kelvin arrived in Stratford and was principal at Midhurst School until 1989 when he became deputy principal at Straford Primary before become principal in 1993.
Kelvin is a vastly experienced principal who is willing to share his knowledge. His writing on education has been published in the Stratford Press.
He has been a member of NZEI Te Riu Roa throughout his career. He has served on the NZEI Principals’ Council and has held many positions in the union at branch and district level. He has been on several education working parties, including the Curriculum Review Ministerial Working Party, and has introduced many education innovations at his own school.
He is National President Elect of the New Zealand Principals’ Federation.
