'Books not Bridges' congratulates University over canning of Bridge
Lobby group 'Books not Bridges today congratulated the University of Otago on its recent decision to relinquish resource consent, and abandon plans to build a controversial bridge over the Leith.
"It has been ten years since we began opposing this idea, and it is wonderful to see a sensible resolution. We have no doubt that changes in university management have been the driving force in this change of direction." said spokesperson Mr Kyle Matthews.
The 'Books not Bridges' group formed to provide a vehicle for community opposition to the project, but will now disband.
"Our last act will be to write to the new Vice-Chancellor and congratulate him, and the council, on its level-headedness in abandoning this project. It has long been a source of divisiveness in the university community, and we look forward a future where the university sets academic achievement as its highest priority." said spokesperson Mr Mark Baxter.
