Government Announcement is Welcomed by WelTec

Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec) has welcomed the Minister of Education’s announcement today of a Quality Reinvestment Fund directed at ITPs.

Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs) have long been acknowledged as the engine room of the economy according to WelTec CEO Dr Linda Sissons. “But funding has not always kept pace with what is needed to deliver highly relevant education and training”, said Dr Sissons.

“Building the key skills for the economy has a cost, and we are very happy that Government has recognised this. The resources that are required to deliver quality trades and technician education must be up to date. Training in hospitality, engineering, construction and information technology requires small class sizes and current specialised equipment.

“We applaud the Minister’s confirmation that the Government believes in a strong and viable ITP sector and is keen to invest and reinvest in it.

“Each year around 11,000 students and trainees enrol at WelTec in programmes that help to address skill shortages in all the areas that the Government has identified as critical. As well as meeting today’s needs, we are also looking to meet the future needs of students, industry and the economy. Through partnerships with some of the most significant industries and employers in our region we are enabling students to learn about new technologies and to find innovative ways to grow productivity and New Zealand’s wealth.”
