BEAR-ing in Mind, it’s For Charity

BEAR-ing in Mind, it’s For Charity

A visit by members of the Crusaders squad caused quite a buzz at Selwyn House School recently.

As winners in a competition, promoted by the Charity Hospital, the school hosted Rueben Thorne, Casey Laulala and Tanerau Latimer who attended assembly, walking in to the school orchestra playing the Crusaders theme music.

The winning fundraising idea was the result of Linda Baran and her Year 7 class putting their thinking hats on to come up with an innovative and effective way to raise much needed funds for the hospital. Their idea was named "Save a Teddy" and involved each class in the school responsible for a teddy (lent to the class by a student) who needed a 'surgical procedure'.

The girls worked together to draft a case study on each teddy, related to what type of procedure their bear needed. Posters were designed, produced and displayed by each class, appealing for funds for their teddy and as a result, $650 was raised for the Charity Hospital. It was a fun and thought provoking project for everyone involved and the icing on the cake was winning the "best fundraising idea" and a visit from the Crusaders.

At Selwyn House, the style of teaching stimulates curiosity, inquiry, reflection and critical thinking and also promotes empathy.

The school endeavours to foster a spirit of discovery and enjoyment of learning, which "Save a Teddy" certainly did for everyone involved.
