NMIT Graduate In Top Five For National Management Awards

Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology Diploma in Business Graduate Robyn Marshall has just been announced as one of five finalists in the NZIM Applied Management Awards.

The finalists were chosen from 28 entries from all over New Zealand.

Robyn graduated from NMIT last year with a New Zealand Diploma in Business which she’d studied for over five years part-time. As part of the Diploma she completed a course in Applied Management which made her eligible to enter the NZIM awards.

“I was so chuffed to find out about making the final five. It was a very nice surprise.”

NMIT Business Tutor Dr Linda Liddicoat says she’s not surprised that Robyn made the finals with her applied management project on “The Management of Gradual Process Injury (GPI - formerly known as RSI)”.

“She’s a mature student who has worked diligently to get her qualification and she did a thorough job on her project. It was very professional and she deserves this recognition.”

Robyn Marshall says she chose the project topic because she was working for the Christchurch College of Education Advisory in Nelson and was the health and safety representative at the time.

“I thought it would be useful to the organisation to look at how GPI affected them and if I could make some improvements. I did research then surveyed staff and finally wrote the report and recommended ways to reduce the effects of GPI for example, regularly reviewing of work station design and ergonomics to keep up with technology advances ,” she says.

Robyn says she feels making these national finals reinforces that she made the right decision to study at NMIT.

“I decided to do the New Zealand Diploma in Business because I wanted to upskill and I really wanted the qualification – that was my motivation, and now I look back on that choice, how far I’ve come and what I’ve learnt and it’s been incredibly worthwhile.”

Robyn and the other finalists have to make a 10 minute presentation on their project recommendations to the judging panel at the finals in Wellington on Tuesday September 11 and then the winner will be chosen that night.

“I’m not at all nervous about the presentation – just excited. It’s a great boost to get this far.”

The awards will be decided on the night, with the winner getting $1000.

Robyn Marshall is now an administrator for Family Start Nelson – an organisation that helps support families from the time of birth to ensure children have the best possible start in life.
