Deputy Secretary Special Education Appointed

Secretary of Education Karen Sewell today announced that Nicholas Pole has been appointed Deputy Secretary Special Education at the Ministry of Education.

Mr Pole is currently Deputy Chief Executive, Social Services Policy at the Ministry of Social Development where he has been since 2001.

“As with all of the deputy secretary roles, this is a critical appointment to the leadership of the Ministry and education sector,” Karen Sewell said.

“Nicholas Pole brings considerable expertise and experience to this role. He has qualifications in education, social research and management and more than 20 years experience working in education and central government.”

Mr Pole will be one of six deputy secretaries at the Ministry of Education. Group Special Education is primarily concerned with a range of special needs. It maintains 50 regional and district offices.

Mr Pole recently led the implementation of the government’s strategic direction in regard to Families Young and Old and, in particular, the establishment of the ministerial team and task force on family violence and the government’s response to the issue of youth gangs in South Auckland. He led the team at the centre of recent welfare reform in New Zealand including the introduction of Working for Families and the adoption of a new approach to supporting people with ill health and disabilities by Work and Income.

Mr Pole has also worked at the Ministry of Education as Senior Manager, Resourcing, a position he was appointed to after a number of years leading the Data Management and Analysis Division.
