Whanganui UCOL Fashion rates as Cult Couture

Auckland’s Villa Maria Cult Couture show will feature four distinctive designs by students and staff from Whanganui UCOL’s School of Fashion.

Their outfits have been selected for inclusion in the highlight of the annual, cutting edge fashion competition – the catwalk show on Saturday 1 November.

Third year Bachelor of Fashion student Tasha Simpson has had two entries selected for the catwalk final, in the On the Streets (pictured) and Formally Yours categories.

Second year students Caitlin Harvey and Alice Walter have made it to the final in the Recycled Fashion section, with an outfit featuring an eclectic mix of colours and fabrics that they designed together.

Fashion lecturer Sue Walker has also had a design selected for inclusion in the Recycled Fashion section of the catwalk.

Acting Programme Leader of the School of Fashion, Cassandra Knight, says achieving four entries in the finals of such a highly rated national fashion event is a great achievement for the students and for Sue. “The Villa Maria Cult Couture, held in Manakau, is an amazing event, combining fashion with live music and dance performances over two nights,” she says.

“Only 80 garments and a total of 65 designers and artists are selected for inclusion in the catwalk show, so we have done very well, with four entries on show.”

The awards are for “one-off garments that convey originality, creativity and innovation” and are open to fashion students and graduates, emerging and established designers and artists from throughout New Zealand.

Last month two School of Fashion students and a lecturer reached the finals of the Westfield Style Pasifika fashion show in Auckland, with second-year Bachelor of Fashion student Michelle Smith taking second place in the Men’s Wear section.
