Digital future for new Auckland families

Community initiative ensures a digital future for new Auckland families

What:
Computers in Homes, Rorohiko I roto ngā Kāinga, is a national programme that, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, brings Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and digital literacy within reach of refugee families in the Auckland region.

Through the Ministry of Education’s ‘Refugee Resettlement Education’ funding, the programme has provided ICT education to refugee communities in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Palmerston North, Christchurch, Nelson and Porirua since 2004.

The programme provides families from Colombian, Somali, Afghani, Burmese, Bhutanese, Burundi, Eritrean, Congolese, Ethiopian, Iraqi and Cambodian communities with computers and internet access, but more importantly, with the training, skills and support to use these technologies to assist them with adjusting into New Zealand life.

Most recently 13 families have been involved locally in Mount Roskill and will celebrate their graduation from the programme in a ceremony to be held at the Wesley Community Centre.

The graduation ceremony will be held from 4:30pm on Tuesday the 24th of February.

Why:
The ‘Computers in Homes Project for Refugee Children and their Families’ helps to involve them in the New Zealand way of life, strengthens relationships between families and schools, improves educational outcomes for children and provides greater opportunities for their parents.
