Blind graduate wins “Student of the Year”

The New Zealand Association of Private Education Providers (NZAPEP), the largest association of private tertiary providers, held its annual Conference this week at the Waipuna Hotel & Conference Centre in Auckland.

At the Awards Dinner last night awards were presented for the student of the year, tutor of the year, provider of the year and for leadership. These awards were sponsored by Cengage Learning and all recipients received a Certificate, voucher for books to the value of $200, a cheque from NZAPEP and an award. Presentations were made by the Sales Manager of Cengage Learning, New Zealand and Queensland, Mr John Lenton, NZ Sales Representative, Ms Michele Ashby and Mrs Edwige Fava, President of NZAPEP.

The recipient of “Student of the Year” was Leyna Coleman, a graduate of the Nanny Centre, Auckland. Leyna has faced a huge hurdle in her training because of her blindness. However she has not let this adversity hinder her in any way and she has never let her disability stand in the way of her goals. She is a student who has succeeded against considerable odds to complete her qualification.

The recipient of “Tutor of the Year” was Philip Healey from Adept Secretarial & Training Services Ltd.

Philip is a quietly spoken, calm and even-tempered man who commands and receives respect in the classroom environment, and is easily approachable even after class hours and who says that over time he has begun to appreciate the qualities needed to be truly successful in the job, as well as some of the rewards.
