Striking Whitireia staff to greet Prince Edward

Staff at Whitireia Polytechnic intend to be at the Wellington Performing Arts Centre on Vivian St at 11.30 this morning to greet Prince Edward.

Staff who are union members at Whitireia Polytechnic been in negotiations for nearly eight months now, including over a week of industrial action and strikes and now two unsuccessful days of mediation. They resumed their industrial action yesterday after mediation failed.

Whitireia Polytechnic and the other five North Island polytechnics with whom it is negotiating continue to insist on cuts to the academics’ existing working conditions.

Union members have removed all their claims from the negotiations apart from a claim to improve the current 2 percent over two years pay offer. Effectively they are seeking now simply not to have existing conditions cut.
