Fronde and WelTec partner to develop IT talent

MEDIA RELEASE

Fronde and WelTec partner to develop IT talent

The outlook is bright for seven Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec) students that have kick-started their careers with a Technology Cadetship. As part of the cadetship programme, the students will receive a fee scholarship, paid employment throughout their studies and gain an introduction into the IT industry with prominent Wellington based company, Fronde.

Described as a solution to continued skill shortages in the industry, the Cadetship programme has run for three years and is proving to be a win-win situation for both parties. This year, Fronde has offered cadetships for three new WelTec students and offered a second year cadetships for four returning students. In addition, Fronde has recently hired three WelTec graduates who were former cadets.

Diploma in Software Engineering student, James Corbishley is one of three new cadets recruited to start in January upon completion of his first year of study. Having worked in New Zealand and abroad for over 10 years, it was the recession that drove James to an alternative career path.

“The IT industry seems to be going quite strong in the recession compared to other industries. My experience has exceeded all expectations; I didn’t think that I would be in this position a year ago.”

“I’m looking forward to developing my skills and learning as much as I can while further understanding Fronde’s business. I’ve never worked in IT so I want to soak up the environment, network and get my foot in the door.”

He credits his tutors at WelTec not only for the opportunity to apply for the cadetship programme but for his learning and experience to date. “I’ve got a lot of respect for my teachers, they have a lot of knowledge and experience to share from working in the industry. The teachers are a real credit to WelTec.”

Ian Clarke, Fronde CEO emphasises that for both Fronde as a company and the industry as a whole there is tremendous value in supporting future professionals at the beginning of their careers in the ICT industry. “Cadetships allow us to provide hands-on training and mentoring to ensure that the transition from academia to work is a successful one and they get the support they need to grow into experienced professionals. At the same time these students are building solid working relationships that can form the foundation for long-term employment.”

“WelTec applicants are impressive. We need self-starters, enthusiastic people who will not only fit in with our team culture but our values as well. WelTec has consistently provided high calibre applicants. As a successful IT services business, the people behind our products and the delivery of them is as important as the solutions themselves. That’s why we look for people with personality, potential and practical skills.”
