CTC Opens Doors to Displaced Students

Canterbury Tertiary College (CTC) is offering students affected by the 22 February earthquake a free education initiative that allows them to complete their NCEA L2 and study a trade or skill at the same time.

The initiative will prioritise young people's education and provide stability and certainty.

"This has been a difficult time for students, some of whom are now having to travel across the city for their secondary schooling," CTC Manager Emma Meijer said.

"We're very pleased to offer new places in our secondary/tertiary programmes and invite students to the Trades Innovation Institute campus to study in a full time or part-time programme. Fortunately the Trades Innovation Institute campus and CTC have the capacity and the facilities to provide extra support to our community."

At CTC, students will complete NCEA L2 and an industry-based qualification that can lead to an apprenticeship or further study. On successful completion of the CTC programme, students will also have the prerequisites to move into a diploma or degree relevant to their CTC study area.

CTC is also an opportunity for students to work with state-of-the-art facilities and tutors who are experienced in industry best practice and up-to-date with current industry needs. This means students can fast track their careers and prepare for the high demand for tradespeople that will occur in the very near future.

As well as providing cost-effective opportunities for young people, the CTC training and education initiative responds to the need for an expanded workforce that will be required to help rebuild Christchurch in the coming years.

Students in the programme remain enrolled at their current secondary school, which means they don't miss out on regular extra-curricular activities and sport.

CTC is based at the Trades Innovation Institute, a CPIT campus that is fully operational and running all regular trades programmes and training.

Applications are open for students interested in the Carpentry, Electrical Engineering and Automotive programmes.
